Adding a Link Bar Based on Navigation Structure to a FrontPage-based Web Site

This article describes how to add a link bar to your either FrontPage-based or a Windows SharePoint Services-based site that is created from the navigation structure of your site.  You can insert a link bar on any page in your site or in a Dynamic Web Template (DWT), a new feature in FrontPage 2003, and the hyperlinks for up and parent pages are automatically updated depending on where that page is located in the Web site.

To create a link bar with back and next links in your FrontPage-based Web site, open the site with FrontPage 2003 and do the following:

  1. Double-click on the page you want to insert the link bar into in the Folder List to open it for editing.
  2. Make sure that this page is part of the navigation structure of the site.  You can do this in the Navigation View (select Navigation from the View menu) by clicking and dragging the page from the Folder List and placing it next to the pages you want to chain this page with.  The graphic below shows how pages look in Navigation View.  Be sure to note the name of the link bar your page is located under because you will need it later.

  3. Select Page from the View menu, so you can edit the page, position your cursor where you want the link bar to be, and then click.
  4. Select Navigation from the Insert menu to bring up the Insert Web Component dialog box. Click Bar with back and next links from the Choose a bar type window and then click Next

  5. Choose a link bar style by clicking on it and then click the Next button.

  6. Choose either the Horizontal or Vertical orientation for the link bar, and then click Finish. The Link Bar Properties dialog box then opens.
  7. Choose the name of the Link Bar your page is located under from the Choose existing drop-down menu, and then click OK

Tip: If you want to change the style of the link bar, you can click the Style tab on the Link Bar Properties dialog box to change the buttons or horizontal or vertical orientation.
